I'm sure you have all heard one story or another about a "child" defending themselves or their home with a firearm. I quoted child because in these instances they have shown an exceptional level of maturity and responsibility under pressure.
I am now going to make a statement most anti-gun folks would cringe at and possibly want child protective services at my door. I believe the minute you decide your child is responsible enough to be left home alone, that should also be the moment you have decided that your child is responsible enough to not only know where your home defense guns are but have access to them. My reasoning for this is when a child is home alone we are leaving them in their own protection, so they need to be able to actually protect themselves should the need arise.
This of course does not mean go out and get some gun for your kids to have a self defense gun. Responsibility comes from teaching kids about firearm safety, handling and the destruction power of guns. This process in my opinion is NOT a one day job. I started with my girls at about a year and a half and is a continuous past of my job add their mom.
Last I want you all to notice that I never once mentioned age. That is because there is no magic age when a child is responsible. Personal responsibility oddly enough is something I think the anti-gun crowd has a real problem with and I just can't wrap my mind around why. Part of the job of being a parent is to know what is best for your child and your family. Only you know when your child is responsible enough for the task of carrying for themselves. I would love to hear how you all decided when your kids were responsible enough to stay home alone and if you think them having access to firearms during that time is acceptable. As always stay safe and stay armed.
