Please allow me to clarify one vital misunderstanding that continues to plague our society today.
Gun owners, and all of those who support our Second Amendment rights, are just as sick, heartbroken, and disturbed about "gun violence" as those who would strip us of our inalienable right to protect ourselves from this (and all other forms of) violence, which are perpetrated throughout the world every day. We do not relish in the idea of being prepared to end a life. We are not taking the lethal force we hold in our hands, or holstered on our hip, lightly. The protection of life (mine, yours, and any other innocent bystander) weighs heavily on our hearts every moment of every day.
To assume and state otherwise is merely displaying your lack of understanding of who we are and your lack of compassion for what we are prepared to do at a moments notice; putting our life and training in between all innocents and any who wish to harm them.
Next time you are speaking to a civilian who carries, open or concealed, try thinking for just a moment about what they are doing, and why they are doing it. They carry the weight of responsibility like no other civilian. They receive no hazard pay, no pension, no glory, but they are willing to step up and end a violent conflict just because they have seen what violence of all forms can do. And, they have decided to act instead of wish, protect instead of mourn, and defend instead of die.
A violent act is a horrible thing. Likewise, standing aside and watching without attempting to defend an innocent life is utter cowardice.
We carry, train, and take responsibility because we hate gun violence, as well as violence of every kind, just as much as you do. We are just a group of people who are realistic that it happens every day and we have decided to say, "Not on my watch."
