My first blog post for 1MMAGC and it's about hunting, never in a million years did I dream I would be speaking about hunting.
I'm Ronda and I'm from the Show-Me State...Missouri! I am a married mother of two sons and three stepdaughters. My passions are guns and hunting. I didn't grow up hunting and shooting, but I married a hunter that is also a firearms enthusiast. For the majority of our marriage I did not share the love of hunting and shooting with him and that was often a source of contention between us.
During Missouri's firearm season 2009 I received a call that was going to change our lives in ways I never imagined. My husband was climbing out of a tree stand and the wooden rung broke causing him to fall to the ground where his right foot landed on a split piece of firewood and shattered his heel. The surgeon told us it was a life altering injury...four surgeries later and a year of non weight bearing proved that to be the case. My husband would not be able to work again. In the blink of an eye more than half of our income was gone and I had to find ways to save money. To everyone's surprise I decided to take up hunting to help with the grocery bills.
At first I only planned to do a minimal amount of deer hunting but I discovered I have a true passion for being in the woods. To my own surprise I also discovered I love shooting (previously I had only shot a gun one time and I was scared to death). Squirrel hunting is my absolute favorite, followed closely by deer hunting. I'm still trying to fall in love with turkey hunting but my patience seems to run a bit thin for it. My hunting buddies assure me that after I get my first turkey I will be hooked on it. I love getting together with friends to go to the range or to go to the woods and hunt.
I cannot express how much gratitude I have for all the hunters who have helped through this process without being judgmental or speaking down to a woman taking up hunting. I am fortunate to have so many people who have supported me along this journey...family, friends and even social media friends.
So, feeding my family is what motivated me to take up hunting but my love of hunting and shooting is what keeps me so passionate about it. I look forward to talking to you more about my hunting experiences.
Now my question is what motivated you to start hunting?
