As I have become more active in the 2A movement and have had more & more interaction with members of gun control groups, one thing I have noticed is their reliance on deception, misdirection and outright lies to get their point across. Since examples of this behavior are too numerous to list, I’ll highlight the most egregious examples and explore the reasons behind them.
The first example is fairly well known and involved a small Moms Demand group and a group of OC Texas members. The OC Texas members had a planned public march which wound up in the parking lot of a local shopping center where 4 members of Moms Demand were holding a meeting. The very next day, MDA posted photos which appeared to show numerous members of the OCT group stacked up with rifles at the low ready with a headline intimating that they were there solely to “intimidate & bully” the MDA people. I will be the first to admit I looked at the photo and said to myself “They can’t be THAT dumb”. As it turns out- they weren’t.
The truth was the OCT members were polite and cordial. They were asked by the MDA people if they were willing to pose for a photo which they readily agreed to. They sat their children in the front, secured their rifles and had them pointed in a safe direction (downwards towards the pavement) and posed for a photo. Unbeknownst to them, another MDA operative was snapping photos from around 40 meters away at an angle that hid the children and showed the OCT members on the end kneeling with the second row looking like they were stacked up ready to breach a door.
So why lie about the entire incident? It’s simple. A nice friendly group of 2A advocates does not fit their civilian disarmament agenda. They need to portray us as violent, threatening and intimidating versus normal everyday Americans. They need to instill in their followers that we aren’t people but rather that we are the enemy- the same way service members are trained to look at combatants as the enemy and not as people. Once that mindset is achieved it will override a person’s reluctance to visit violence upon them. Of course the result of this mindset is reflected in the SWATing death of John Crawford III in an Ohio WalMart and the beating & choking of 62 year old Clarence Daniels in Florida. This is their desired outcome- that those of us who simply wish to be left alone will be killed / beaten by their followers. They want us to be so terrified of repercussions attached to exercising our rights that we stop doing so. Shannon Watts even Tweeted that she was disappointed the man who beat a senior citizen for carrying a firearm rather than saying attacking old men for no reason whatsoever is not a good thing to do.
My next example is also fairly well known. Moms Demand / Everytown claimed in a “study” done in mid 2014 that there had been 74 school shootings since Newtown. That is a serious number, one that should cause everyone to react with shock & horror, one that grabbed national attention and was spread across the internet accompanied by renewed calls for banning guns. That number was also utterly, completely and totally false.
When it first came out I did my own research into the incidents that were cited. I was able to find 7 incidents that fit the definition of a school shooting in which someone entered a school building and began shooting children. Even CNN, which has never met a gun control advocate they don’t like, was only able to find 15 (and that was by stretching the definition of school shooting). MDA / Everytown considered gang shootings in the middle of the night as a school shooting. They counted people shot several blocks away as a school shooting. They counted drug deals gone bad in campus parking lots as a school shooting. They counted police officers shooting violent suspects, gang initiations, suicides, muggings in parking lots after hours and even someone discharging a BB gun. They went so far as to count an incident where a man was shot across town and dumped on school property as a school shooting.
So why was this done? Shannon is a PR maven and is very good at what she does. She is the penultimate spinmeister, having served as the head of Monsanto’s global PR & Media Relations division. This background is why Bloomberg selected her to run his organization. She knew full well that a lie gets around the world before the truth has tied its shoelaces. By counting incidents that were in no way, shape or form a school shooting and putting out the press release she was counting on people not looking into her statements. This strategy worked for a time as people across the country reacted with shock and horror. Of course this “study” was eventually debunked but not before 2A advocates were demonized for opposing Shannon’s “gunsense”. We were told we support policies that led to “74 school shootings” while visions of dead 1st graders danced in people’s heads. Of course it was a complete falsehood, but she accomplished her mission and once again dehumanized gun owners, reinforcing the concept of us as “the enemy” to her followers.
The latest one was truly hilarious. It involved a photo taken about a half mile from the NRA Convention. Yes I know the whole “No guns at the NRA convention” thing was another famous example but that was simply an outright lie rather than an attempt at misdirection so I’m leaving that one alone. The photo was of an apparently huge group of MDA supporters and was put out as “hundreds” of #gunsense voters. If you look at the photo there does seem to be a significant crowd of people there. A quick glance would support the assertion that there were over 400 people there. When you look closely however, the truth comes out.
The photo is a perspective trick done with camera angles. In reality there were slightly over 100 people present for the photo. The reason that there is a definitive line where people in the photo appear about half the size as those in the foreground is because the photo was staged to make it appear the crowd was much larger than it actually was. Mr. Bob Owens of Bearing Arms went one step further and took photos that showed how the trick was achieved and made it possible to get a reasonably accurate headcount of the people present. The truth is there weren’t “hundreds” of gunsense voters but rather around 130-150 gunsense voters. Yup- for their biggest protest of the year the organization that claims 90% support of the American people could muster, at most, 150 or so people. The NRA convention… 80,000 – 90,000.
So why the trick photography? Moms Demand is sinking rapidly along with Everytown, Coalition to Stop Gun Violence & the Brady Center (the last two are rapidly fading into obscurity). “Gunsense” candidates lost over 90% of the elections this past November. Pro 2A laws are being passed left & right all over the country. Anti-gun politicians are being recalled. Even their cheerleaders in the mass media are starting to call them out on their lies. They need the smoke & mirrors to make it appear that they can muster significant numbers of people at their events. They need to bamboozle their followers and supporters (whose advocacy amounts to clicking “Like” on Facebook or a retweet) into thinking they are on a winning team. They need to maintain the illusion of relevancy, an illusion financed by the billionaire behind the curtain that Shannon hopes & prays nobody notices.
Their problem is that the light of truth will always shine through the smoke of their obfuscation, dishonesty and lies.
