Today I woke up to news that a wonderful young singer, Christina Grimmie was shot and killed in a murder / suicide at a venue where she was signing autographs. This is a scenario we in law enforcement see on a daily basis- a stalker, an ex-boyfriend, an obsessed individual decides that if they can’t have her, nobody can, and acts. We saw it happen with Carol Bowne, stabbed to death in New Jersey, where gun control extremists ensure women are easy prey. This time the life lost was a rising star in the music industry, a young woman just 22 years old.
Of course immediately upon hearing the news, Shannon Watts and her also-ran buddy Ladd Everitt jumped into the still warm puddles of blood to wallow around. A visit to their Facebook pages shows the usual gun control extremist narrative of blaming the NRA, calling for door-to-door confiscation, calling for the shooting deaths of gun owners (yet we’re the violent ones right?) etc.
I’d like to take a moment here to digress from the article to make an observation. People like Shannon Watts and Ladd Everitt don’t want less victims, they want more. Without new victims they can point to, without new victims they can politicize, without new victims that they can exploit, without new pools of blood for them to splash in, Bloomberg’s money stops flowing. I just wanted to clarify their motives for our gentle readers.
Back on topic:
What these gun control extremists, and their followers, will conveniently leave out is that in this case, they actually got their wish. Their every desire came to fruition at a venue in Florida called “The Plaza LIVE”. Just like Sandy Hook, just like the Aurora theater, just like VA Tech, just like Ft. Hood, just like Columbine, just like the Washington Navy Yard, just like Luby’s cafeteria, just like the Long Island Railroad… it is a “Gun Free Zone”. The very first item on their “Prohibited” list is firearms.
Prohibited Items and Entry Procedures
While on Plaza Live property, Patrons and their belongings may be searched by Plaza Live staff using both contact and non-contact methods.
Without proper authorization, Patrons are not permitted to possess the follow items while on Plaza Live property at any time;
Firearms/ Concealed Weapons
While I fully understand that having a firearm does not guarantee that someone will survive a lethal force encounter, it gives them a CHANCE to. It is why my Department issued me an HK USP .45 pistol, a Remington 870 shotgun, and a Bushmaster built M4. My having those tools to hand increases my chance of making it through my shift and going home to see my family. They don’t guarantee it, but they level the playing field.
I also realize that 95% of my job is arriving after a crime has been committed, recording the circumstances of the incident, and hopefully finding & arresting the perpetrator. Realistically, if one were to truly examine my profession and describe it accurately, I am essentially an armed reporter with arrest powers. I’d like to be there before a violent incident occurs, but I neither possess the powers of precognition, nor do I work for the Department of Pre-Crime (yes gun control folks- Minority Report was fiction).
I further realize that an honest citizen having their own firearm increases their chance of surviving a lethal force encounter.
Christina Grimmie, her brother who tackled the shooter, and every other patron in the venue were stripped of that chance.
What is even more perverse is that those pushing to create more “Gun Free Zones”, those pushing for a “disarmed society”, those who tolerate and celebrate their followers violent fantasies of killing good guys with guns, do so from behind a veritable phalanx of heavily armed guards, funded by Michel Bloomberg who famously stated “Only the police should have guns” while surrounded by privately hired and funded security.
I digressed a little there but what is the solution to the problem of violent, obsessed people who wish to do others harm?
Is the solution more “Gun Free Zones”? Is it a 2-4 month long applications to carry while an unstable and violent stalker is on his way to your house? Is it dialing 911 and waiting 10 minutes or so for someone like me to show up? Is the solution making firearms illegal with the knowledge that criminals will still obtain whatever they want anyway?
Perhaps, and bear with me here, the solution is to empower the intended victim. Perhaps the solution is to enable the weak, the elderly, women and the disabled to effectively resist an attack right then and there. Perhaps the solution is to allow citizens to have the same tools that they have given to me, and for the same reason; to give them a chance to live to see another day.
