In the past few days there have been a flurry of articles from The Daily News, MSNBC and Mother Jones on how the NRA convention is a “gun free zone”, how the NRA wants guns in school but prohibits guns from the convention and other such rhetoric.
These articles have been picked up by anti-gun activists on Facebook and Twitter and repeated ad nauseum. What is the problem with all of these articles? They are completely, utterly false and were published without one iota of research. Even Shannon Watts of Moms Demand Action jumped onto the dogpile, putting out false information in a series of Tweets and Facebook posts. It appears that the entire MSM and gun control industry has taken a page from Rolling Stone magazine and running with stories that fit their agenda regardless of their basis in reality.
A quick check of the NRA Annual Meeting Facebook page as well as the NRA website clearly shows that functional, loaded firearms may be carried by anyone legally able to inside the convention center. Handguns, rifles, shotguns… all may be carried by law abiding convention attendees. They can be carried concealed. They can be carried openly. They can be carried unloaded. They can be carried loaded. There is NO prohibition whatsoever against attendees carrying firearms at the convention.
Firearms that are on display by manufacturers that will be passed around, be handled by numerous people, that are offered for sale, will all be rendered safe. What the MSM and Moms Demand don’t understand is this practice is ACTUAL gun safety. One should NEVER under ANY circumstances hand a loaded firearm to another person. Whether it is crossing a fence while hunting or at a gun store- the magazine is removed or the cartridges ejected, the action is opened, the chamber inspected and then and ONLY then does the firearm change hands. The same way that firearms on display at a military recruiting event or firearms for sale in a gun store are unloaded and safed, those at the NRA convention floor on display & for sale will be also.
They also are making all kinds of noise about firearm purchases needing a background check at the convention. This of course is a complete red herring. The NRA convention is not a gun show and individuals do not set up tables with firearms for sale. It is an industry convention with manufacturers showcasing new firearms. Manufacturers must either hold a Type 01 Federal Firearms License or ship any firearm bought to a Type 01 Federal Firearms License holder. Most opt to ship since not many hold that license. Nobody can purchase a new firearm from a FFL without going through a NICS background check. This is Federal Law and has been so for over 20 years. We all know that and you can bet a month worth of salary that they do too.
Of course, as with any successful lie, there is one tiny grain of truth in the middle of the big lie. Just like the Rolling Stone article about the Psi Kappa Psi “rape” included a bit of truth (the fraternity exists which is the extent of the facts in the article), the MSM stories which have been repeated by gun control groups with the full knowledge that they are false also have one fact within the litany of lies. Firearms are not permitted in the nearby Bridgestone concert hall where Jeff Foxworthy is going to perform.
Yup- that’s it. You can carry a loaded firearm, should you choose to at the convention center. You can’t carry at an offsite concert hall… but the NRA convention is somehow a “gun free zone”. There must be background checks on firearms purchases from manufacturers because it is literally impossible to buy a new firearm without one. So- why the disingenuousness? Well let’s face it- if these people actually had to rely on fact instead of outright lies & blatant distortion their “Momentum” would come to a stop in the same way Wile E. Coyote comes to a stop at the bottom of the canyon in those Roadrunner cartoons.
But hey- the upside is that they do have a lot of gunsense!
