Everyone involved in the shooting sports / 2A rights movement as well as supporters of the gun control industry has heard of Shannon Watts, the so-called founder of Moms Demand Action by now. What many don’t know is what her background is, who the REAL Shannon Watts is. Far from being the Suzy Soccer Mom she portrays herself as, she is a high powered corporate mouthpiece hand selected to shepherd suburban upper middle class housewives under the banner of “gunsense”. In this 3 part series I will deconstruct the fiction she has built up that many believe to be true. Far from being a hit piece, these articles will simply lay out the facts of her background based on her work history, that of her husband, her own LinkedIn profile and the timeline of the Moms Demand Action (then called 1 Million Moms for Gun Control) Facebook page along with her various media appearances during the first few months of the group’s existence. Nothing more and nothing less than cold, hard truth.
Of course we have all heard the legend of how Shannon Troughton Marmion Watts, a stay at home mom, heard about the shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School and ran home from her yoga class to start her organization based on nothing more than her reaction to the sheer horror of the event. As far as stories go, it is a nice one. It's simple, emotionally visceral and tugs at the heartstrings. You can almost picture it in your mind. The problem is that the story, like many other things Ms. Watts has said, is totally untrue.
Let’s begin by looking at Ms. Watts’ background and her life experience beyond the legend of the stay at home mom. According to her LinkedIn profile, her first public relations job came in 1993 as a Public Affairs Officer for the Missouri State Government under Democrat Mel Carnahan. Suzy Soccer Mom cut her PR teeth working as a Public Affairs Officer for a rabidly anti-gun politician. This is the first of her pre Moms Demand connections to gun control extremists in her background.
She then moved to a position as Vice President for Corporate and Public Affairs at Fleishman-Hilliard, a massive public relations firm that handles such clients as the Bayer Corporation, Perdue Pharma and Monsanto. Her work here set the stage for several employment transitions within the world of multi-national conglomerates and major health care corporations.
Three years later she took a position at Monsanto as the Director of Global Public and Corporate Affairs. Read that title again. Suzy Soccer Mom was the chief mouthpiece for Monsanto on a global basis. She formulated press releases in which suing farmers whose fields were pollinated by bees carrying Monsanto GMO pollen from adjoining fields was “good business practice”. Far from being the “concerned mom” she portrays today, she was concerned with putting a good face on bankrupting family farms that didn’t have the resources to fight Monsanto’s onslaught against them based on the actions of wild bees.
From Monsanto she shifted her employment once again to be the Director for Global Communications for GE Healthcare. Here she was in charge of a 10 member team whose job it was to be the face and voice of a Fortune 100 company that generated over 14 billion in revenue on medical diagnosis and imaging devices alone annually. I don’t know many stay at home moms who have been Global Directors of Communications for multi-national corporations. I’m not saying that they don’t exist out there somewhere- but then again I’m not going to say that the Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot don’t exist out there somewhere. I find it highly unlikely that they do, and there is a better chance of the next hurricane raining down Bowmore 25 year old Islay Scotch, but anything is possible.
Her next job which she took in 2005 provided her with both a husband, John Watts Jr. and a connection to her eventual financier- the powerful & politically connected NY multi-billionaire gun control extremist Michael Bloomberg. She became the Vice President for Corporate Communication for WellPoint. Her husband John S. Watts Jr. was a fellow WellPoint executive whose clients as Chief Executive of National Accounts for WellPoint included… you guessed it… Michael Bloomberg via the NY City Blue Cross health care plans which were acquired by WellPoint in 2005- the same year Shannon took over as the head of their PR division. Pretty amazing coincidence that Ms. Watts, a high powered corporate PR executive, whose husband handled the NYC Blue Cross accounts while Michael Bloomberg was Mayor, whose first job in the PR world was working for a rabidly anti-gun Governor, would start a gun control group that was funded by Michael Bloomberg immediately after Sandy Hook huh?
