The only gun that you should carry is the largest caliber commercially available: a sniper rifle in .50 BMG. Just displaying that monster is enough to scare away the Incredible Hulk.
No, wait. Not all states permit long gun carry, and such rifles are often prohibitively expensive. When you factor in the weight issues, deployment issues, and cost of ammo, that gun is just not going to work.
What you REALLY want is something light, cheap, and definitely concealable: a micro .22 derringer. You can have that on you literally anywhere, as some people have actually sneaked those pea shooters into prison. And the draw is no problem! Just stick your hand in your pocket and pull out two rounds of "I'm slightly upset with this current situation."
Well, no. That's not always a viable option. Most agree that .22 caliber isn't exactly a reliable fight-stopper, and the extremely limited capacity can leave you in as much trouble as Joe Biden's wife on the balcony.
On a serious note, I really cannot tell you that you're carrying the wrong gun. Very few can, but some are going to try anyway. Just remember that, no matter what you carry, you're compromising. You could
1) have a larger caliber
2) have a higher capacity magazine
3) have a longer sight radius,
but if you can't
1) put rounds on target with speed and accuracy
2) conceal (if you choose) a longer grip
3) comfortably carry
then you won't be carrying the right gun anyway.
We advocate that you choose your own risks as well as make your own compromises. You're a (mostly) free adult, and nobody knows what is best for you other than you.
